'On the Road' Oscar Talk From Hitfix and Scott Feinberg

No comments:

June is still two days away, but with the 2011 movie season edging close to the halfway mark, it's becoming painfully apparent Hollywood is in for one humdinger of a competitive awards season. The fireworks won't really begin until the Venice/Telluride/Toronto triumvirate of festivals at the beginning of September, but with studios setting their fourth quarter release dates, hot Cannes titles getting acquired and buzz leaking about what contenders have already been screened it's hard not to see the wheels already in motion. Taking all that into account, here are 10 topics of interest that should hold you over until August. And besides, it's never really to early to talk Oscar, is it?

It's a year of ingenues
We'll talk about Ms. Streep's chances at finally winning a third best actress prize in a minute, but 2012 is clearly looking like the younger ladies could dominate both acting races. The list of contenders includes Elizabeth Olsen ("Martha Marcy May Marlene"), Felicity Jones ("Like Crazy"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Like Crazy"), Kristen Stewart ("On the Road"), Michelle Williams ("My Week with Marilyn"), Kirsten Dunst ("Melancholia"), Bryce Dallas Howard ("The Help"), Jessica Chastain ("The Help," "Take Shelter"), Keira Knightley ("A Dangerous Method"), Scarlett Johansson ("We Brought a Zoo"), Evan Rachel Wood ("The Ides of March") and Anna Kendrick ("50/50"). Needless to say, the roles for ladies have much improved over the past 12 months.

The most competitive best picture field in years?
After "The Blind Side" made the field of ten nominees in 2010, there were many that said it would be difficult to find enough worthy films in the expanded best picture category. The second year of the expansion proved that theory false with a number of significant films being left out in the cold. This year, quality prestige films are on a comeback trail. Look at this preliminary list of 28 possible contenders (those in bold have already screened).

"Crazy Stupid Love," "J. Edgar," "The Descendants," "We Built A Zoo" (Cameron Crowe), "Like Crazy," "Take Shelter," "My Weekend With Marilyn," "The Iron Lady," "War Horse" (Spielberg), "Hugo Cabret" (Martin Scorsese), "Moneyball," "Dream House" (Jim Sheridan), "Midnight in Paris," "Drive," "The Tree of Life," "Young Adult" (Jason Reitman), "50/50," "The Artist," "Contagion" (Steven Soderbergh), "Ides of March" (Clooney), "The Guard," "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" (Stephen Daldry), "Gods of Carnage" (Roman Polanski), "On the Road" (Walter Salles), "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" (Tomas Alfredson), "In the Land of Blood and Honey" (Angelina Jolie), "A Dangerous Method" (David Cronenberg).

Kristen in 'On The Road', Oscar Winner?

No comments:

On The Road, Kristen Stewart

Written by Tom Rose at celebs.gather.com: Kristen Stewart is one of the world's hottest stars and her fan base on any movie is built in. But is she an Oscar-calibre actress? The buzz over her soon to be released movie On the Road is that she gives the best performance of her life and an Oscar should be in her future.

So far Kristen has been filling theater seats because of the heat between her and Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson. Are they or aren't they a couple? That kind of press doesn't help her to be considered a "serious" actress but her non-Bella Swan projects have been favorably reviewed by movie critics. Although The Runaways was a box office disappointment, Kristen's performance got rave reviews.

On the Road is a classic novel which has a tortured history of making it to the screen, and lovers of the tale have always felt a movie has to be true to its spirit of non-conformity and resistance to "selling out" which is part of its appeal. So naysayers were a little disappointed when it was revealed that Kristen landed the role of Mary Lou, a character known for her maddening duality and sexual appetite. Could Kristen bring realism to the part?

According to E! Online, Hollywood columnist Scott Feinberg is spreading the word that everyone who's seen the raw version agrees that Kristen nailed the part, and several of the actors in the movie are selflessly proclaiming that she deserves an Academy Award for her work in the film.

On the Road will be released in December. Just in time for Oscar season... Go Kristen!

Update on K-11: Kristen not listed as Cast Members and Nikki Reed mentioning her

No comments:

Nikki Reed

"K-11 is where they basically put people who wouldn't survive in the general population," Nikki Reed revealed of the project when she stopped by the MTV studios recently for an exclusive chat. "Sometimes celebrities, people who are HIV-positive, people who have raped or beaten children — any of those things. My character [named Mousey] is a male prostitute, and he goes in and out of the jail because it is comfortable to have a place to sleep and recoup and relax and have food and shelter — [when he] gets sent back out, there is a lot of underground drug stuff that is going on. [K-11] is a world in itself."

As we reported back in November, the duo's gutsy "Twilight" follow-up will dramatize the little-known Los Angeles jail section set aside for in-danger convicts. Stewart and Reed plan to shoot the movie during a brief window this summer between "New Moon" and "Eclipse."

"It's a great project, and obviously I have a lot of faith in Kristen and her mom, Jules Stewart, who wrote the script and is directing it," Reed said. "Kristen is playing a boy, and I am playing a man who is quite a few years older than she is. I am working more on my accent. Mousey is Mexican, and she comes from a very specific place in Southern California."

While the acting skills of Independent Spirit Award-winner Reed and "Into the Wild" star Stewart have always been impressive, both realize that they'll have to dig deep to pull off the gender-bending transformations. "There'll be a lot of prosthetics, makeup," explained the actress, who plays Rosalie Hale in the "Twilight" saga. "I thought it was difficult stepping into Rosalie's shoes! It's gonna be a lot more difficult stepping into Mousey's shoes. It is a very raw, edgy take on this story in this setting; it is going to be very challenging. I am not going to run away from it, but it certainly takes a lot of preparation mentally and physically."

And for those keeping score at home, Reed's difficult challenge will have her playing a him, trapped in the body of a her. "I don't really have the most androgynous look, so that is going to be interesting," laughed the stunner. "I'm playing a man who has become a woman. ... I was born a man, but I never felt like a man — I always knew that I was a woman. I just was born with the wrong body parts."

But, despite the smile on Nikki's face as she tried to explain Mousey's gender, she was quick to point out that "K-11" is not a comedy. "I think that with any genre, any material that is super heavy — smart writers tend to add a comedic element," she said of the script. "So, there are funny moments in there, and some of the things I do and say are pretty outrageous ... but I wouldn't categorize this as a comedy."

Co-starring Kevin Smith fave Jason Mewes, Reed told us that the film should be announcing additional casting soon — and in the meantime, KStew and Nikki will be perfecting their "K-11" characters between takes of the now-filming "New Moon." "[Stewart] doesn't have the same level of physical transformation as me, but she definitely came to the table with a plethora of ideas ... her character doesn't have facial hair or an Adam's apple [because] she is playing more of a boy."

"It's a challenge," she laughed, looking forward to the shoot. "I mean, I am playing a man."

Yen Press, the graphic novel imprint of Hachette Book Group, announced that it will publish the eagerly-awaited second volume in the graphic novel adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight on October 11, 2011. Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Volume 2 will be released as an e-book and in hardcover for $19.99 ($22.99 CAN) with a first printing of 350,000 copies.

A visually arresting retelling of the story that has captured the hearts and minds of countless fans, Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Volume 2 contains selected text from Meyer’s original novel with illustrations by the talented Korean artist Young Kim. Kim’s unique artistic style which combines Asian and Western comic techniques are showcased in this black-and-white graphic novel with color interspersed throughout. Meyer consulted throughout the artistic process and had input on every panel.

“Knowing how beautifully Young Kim rendered the Twilight universe in the first volume, I couldn’t wait for this next one,” remarked Meyer. “Her illustrations of characters and settings gorgeously capture the world and are very close to what I saw in my mind’s eye while writing Twilight.”

Kurt Hassler, Yen Press Publishing Director, commented, “The first volume of the Twilight graphic novel was an utter phenomenon in the category, and the reception by Stephenie’s fans was absolutely overwhelming. It’s an incredible testament to the collaboration between Stephenie and Young Kim, and we cannot wait to be able to put the second volume into the readers’ hands!”

Indiewire.com: Dueling Snow Whites: Relativity’s Grimm vs. Universal’s Huntsman, The Casts So Far

No comments:
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Do we need two Snow White movies? Probably not. But the two in the works, The Brothers Grimm: Snow White (Relativity) and Snow White and the Huntsman(Universal) both want to take home the bag of gold. The Grimm version, directed by Tarsem Singh, will be first out of the gate with its new March 16, 2012 release date (Huntsman is July 1, with director Rupert Sanders). While we’re certain one proper take on the classic fairy tale is enough, success will come to the film that becomes a must-see. Casualties of the competition so far include shortened production and post-production time and added pressure on commercial viability (as opposed to creative merit) of both films.

One hazard is the temptation to cater to Twilight fans as Red Riding Hood did.Look how that turned out. Joe Wright, for example, is holding off on The Little Mermaid until this fairy tale trend has subsided just a tad (check out the results of our fairy tale poll below). Huntsman, at least, boasts a kick-ass heroine.
Check out the casts so far of Grimm (above) and Huntsman, and synopses below.
Grimm Cast, Pictured: Lily Collins (Snow White), Julia Roberts (Evil Queen), Armie Hammer (Prince Andrew Alcott), Nathan Lane (Queen’s servant, Brighton) and the Seven Dwarfs: Mark Povinelli, Jordan Prentice, Danny Woodburn, Sebastian Saraceno, Ronald Lee Clark, Martin Klebba and Joey Gnoffo. Also cast, but not pictured: Mare Winningham (Baker Margaret) and Michael Lerner (Baron).
Huntsman Cast: Kristen Stewart (Snow White), Charlize Theron (Evil Queen), Chris Hemsworth (The Huntsman), Sam Claflin (Prince Charmant).

Grimm [Relativity]: A spectacular reimagining of the classic fairy tale, an evil queen steals control of a kingdom, and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright in a spirited adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance, and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over.

Huntsman [According to IMDb]: In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman (Hemsworth) ordered to take Snow White (Stewart) into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen (Theron).

'Twilight’ to ‘True Blood’: Why We Suck the Evil out of Vampires

No comments:
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

The Los Angeles Times has a great essay written by Christopher Farnsworth, author of The President’s Vampire. These days good vampires are not terribly uncommon, from Twilight to True Blood and even Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Blade have vampires who aren’t just flat out evil. Farnsworth looks back to when comic books first starting creating good vampires and what he thinks has driven our need to create some good out of all the bad. It used to be you’d never see a vampire as the good guy. After all, a vampire, by its nature, hunts and kills human beings. There are centuries of folklore detailing how mankind has been forced to defend itself against these lethal parasites. That’s not a reputation you lose overnight.

But today, vampires have moved into the light – metaphorically speaking, anyway. Edward Cullen and his family of vampire vegetarians – who only drink animal blood – are only the most famous examples. The ranks of on-screen vampire good guys includes Bill Compton from “True Blood,” Angel and Spike from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Nick Knight from “Forever Knight,” the title hero from the “Blade” films and comics, Mick Angel from the “Moonlight” series, Selene from “Underworld” and maybe a dozen more that even I’ve never heard of.

Like everything else, however, comics got there first. Comic books have been turning vampires into superheroes since at least 1966, when Dell Comics tried to turn three of the iconic Universal horror monsters into heroes. A direct descendant of Dracula put on a purple bodysuit and a bat-shaped belt-buckle and swore an oath to fight injustice. Was it a concept ahead of its time — or just a concept with bad timing? Either way, the series lasted all of three issues.
