Carey Mulligan and Kristen Stewart nominated for Rising Star Bafta

They shot to stardom in two very different films but Carey Mulligan Kristen Stewart have been recognised as two of the world’s hottest young actresses with nominations for the Orange Rising Star Bafta Award.

Mulligan, 24, who won critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination for bringing to life a Sixties schoolgirl in An Education, and Stewart, 19, famous for her role as the girlfriend of a vampire in the cult film series Twilight, are up against three young actors to take home the gong at next month’s ceremony.

About A Boy and Skins actor Nicholas Hoult, 20, received a nod after his turn in designer Tom Ford’s directing debut A Single Man won praise at the Venice Film Festival. The movie, due to be released next month, will be quickly followed by another Hoult showing in the blockbuster Clash of the Titans.

While he has less experience and fame than Hoult, French actor Tahar Rahim, who at 29 is this year’s oldest nominee, may prove stiff competition after his turn in the forthcoming film A Prophet was met with praise at the Cannes Film Festival.

American Jesse Eisenberg, 26, who has a string of film titles to his name, could also take the award. The actor starred opposite fellow nominee Stewart in 2009’s Adventureland and has several movies, including Holly Rollers and The Social Network, in production.

Previous winners of the award, which was launched five years ago, include James McAvoy, Eva Green and Noel Clarke, who sat on this year’s jury to decide the nominees.

Clarke, who is currently on the big screen in the Ian Drury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll said the Rising Star award had give his career a push.

“Winning the Orange Rising Star Award in 2009 was the highlight of my year," he said.

“Since winning I have gone on to direct a brand new feature which is due to be released in the summer and I hope this year’s winner finds the accolade as beneficial to their career as I have.”

The winner is decided by a public vote and will be announced at the Bafta ceremony on February 21.
