Hollywood's hottest stars come out swinging for Oscar juice: Kristen and Dakota (The Runaways)
• Dakota Fanning, Kristen Stewart and Michael Shannon in The Runaways: Floria Sigismondi’s debut didn’t light the fire it should have, but then again, The Runaways didn't get the respect they deserve either. This story of Joan Jett and Cherie Currie’s rise and fall in the world of ’70s L.A. glitter was a chick flick with a chip on its shoulder. The outsider vibe buzzes all the way through this visually evocative art film with next-gen talents. Fanning and Stewart dominate the screen as young performers with natural presence, but it’s really Michael Shannon as gonzo promoter Kim Fowley who picks the set decor apart with his teeth.
To consider for Best Actress (Fanning, Stewart) Best Supporting Actor (Shannon).

The DVD was released in Australia today.

What It's About: The action begins to pick up in this, the third chapter in the Twilight franchise. Bella (Kristen Stewart) not only has to contend with regular teenage angst (her high school graduation is looming), she is again forced to the center of a romantic tug-of-war with love Edward (Robert Pattinson) on one side and friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner) on the other. Add in a vengeance plot by malicious vampires ravaging nearby Seattle and you finally get a slam-bam sequel.
It's Kinda Like: 'Dark Shadows' with raging hormones
What We Say: The Twilight saga finally comes of age with a story line that transcends the girly pulp of the previous outings. Sure we get the by-now-de-rigueur Edward-Jacob stare downs and the obligatory Bella mopey behavior but -- surprise, surprise -- the characters have deepened and matured, with a bit more of an emphasis on inner conflicts other than jealousy and unrequited love. But wait, there's more: Throw in a very exciting and bloody (for this soap) battle between bad vampires and good vampires, with the werewolves joining in with the latter for good measure. This is not your little sister's romance flick any more.
• Extras: The DVD and Blu-ray versions are loaded with extras, including deleted and extended scenes, commentary with Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, commentary with Stephenie Meyer, a photo gallery, a six-part "making of" documentary, music videos, and "Fast-Forward" features that allow viewers to jump directly to their favorite character's scenes.

Kristen Stewart's "Welcome to the Rileys" heading to Blu-Ray/DVD in February
WTTR had a limited opening this fall, and Kristen Stewart and co-stars James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo spent a lot of October promoting the picture, via press conferences and the like.
The movie has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the critics. For instance, Roger Ebert said the following about it:
"Welcome to the Rileys" takes two old plots and makes a rather touching new plot out of them. What we’ve seen before is (1) the good man who hopes to redeem a prostitute, and (2) the frozen suburban couple who find new hope in their marriage. The film involves such characters in a story that is a little more real and involving than we expect.
Fan reactions to the film have been very good as well. In fact, one group of fans has begun a fundraiser to ensure WTTR is a part of major award show considerations.
New Fan Encounter with Kristen, Rob and Taylor
Oh and Taylor was with them.
@doughtwittfunny "Hi guys. News to you guys. Has a friend of mine in the U.S. that saw the Twilight trio in a restaurant in for lunch. Check it out!"
A Chat With "Welcome to the Rileys" Director Jake Scott (he mentions Kristen)
The British filmmaker Jake Scott (yep, son of Ridley) might not be a household name, but you probably came across his videos on MTV during the '90s—he's shot promos for Radiohead, U2, The Cranberries, and others. Welcome to the Rileys, a skewed family drama starring James Gandolfini, Melissa Leo, and Kristen Stewart, is Scott’s second feature film. It's showing right now at the new West End Cinema. Arts Desk recently asked Scott some questions about depicting post-Katrina New Orleans, about asking his actors to take a leap, and about his reaction to critics' across-the-board reactions.
Washington City Paper: Welcome to the Rileys seems to be a departure from your previous work, which mostly are in the realm of music videos. What attracted you to it?:
WCP: So the actual story takes place in pre-Katrina, then?
JS: No. The original script was written before Katrina. We didn’t make any attempt to hide the fact that Katrina had happened. The house that Kristin Stewart’s character lived in has all the markings of the EMT crews on the façade of the building, which were the actual markings left there after Katrina. People would mark how many bodies, or how many dead animals they had so rescue crews would know what they’d be dealing with.
WCP: All three of the main actors in the film—James Gandolfini, Melissa Leo, and Kristen Stewart—all play very different characters from what they are traditionally cast as. What role did you play as a director in shaping their characters?
JS: First of all, remember that they’re very good actors. And in many ways, eager to do something new. Kristen, at the time, had only done the first Twilightfilm and no one had seen it yet when she came down to New Orleans to work on this new film. She was still relatively new to playing Bella Swan. But you know, Kristen’s a young, very hardworking actress who’s trying to experiment and try new things. And James was eager to get past his 10 years of Tony Soprano and shed that skin by playing someone completely unlike anyone he had played before. Same goes for Melissa. In terms of the experience, we were all venturing into an unknown territory. That really helps, because you get fresh ideas, bolder performances.

What to Rent: New DVDs This Week (Eclipse featuring)
Out on DVD this Saturday, the third installment in the Twilight franchise picks up as Victoria prepares her army of newborn vampires to destroy Bella. In order to protect her, rivals Jacob and Edward must ban together and put their differences aside (even though Edward and Bella's recent engagement is an obvious thorn in Jacob's side). Many critics called the film the best of the series so far, thanks to sharp fight scenes and CGI. Fans should choose the Special Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo version, which includes deleted scenes, audio commentary with Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, a 90-minute making-of documentary, photo gallery, music videos, and more.

Another Chance to Win "Eclipse" DVD!
E! Online: Caught! Robert and Kristen Do It Deli-Style
What would you expect a totally in love couple to do?
Rob and Kristen were spotted out together in Los Angeles over the weekend, at a low-key hang:
An employee confirms to E! the on- and off-screen couple stopped by Roxy's Famous Deli in the San Fernando Valley on Friday night.
The gorg duo apparently flew way under the radar, and was left pretty much alone, says an onlooker who, well, really didn't care (or care to gawk).
No wonder Robsten much prefers hanging in the Valley! Kristen is always over there, and goes fairly unnoticed.
Stewart's parents live on the other side of the debauched Hollywood Hills, so we assume that's where R. and K. spent Thanksgiving. Because we hear they did spend it together.
For you Twi-Hards keeping track (and bitching in today's mail), Saturday is when there was another Rob sighting out in Hollywood.
Glad these babes are getting some down time together before they head back to Louisiana.
Another couple seemingly on right now is Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen, who were spotted out to dinner recently at the Bazaar in the SLS Hotel all lovey-dovey.
"They walked in holding hands and when they checked in, her head was on his shoulder," an eyewitness dishes. "They were very cute."
The twosome sat in the back corner, next to a table where Mila Kunis and Woody Harrelson were eating, and ordered a variety of dishes, including the Philly Cheesesteak.
As we said, the two started talking again after calling off their engagement months ago so perhaps they are on track to getting back back together.
Still not sold on 'em.
Elsewhere in H-Wood, a guy not exactly having a low key evening recently was Kiefer Sutherland, who was hanging with pals at Station Hollywood before enjoying dinner at Delphine at the W hotel until around 2 a.m.
The 24 dude must have had a taste of something he liked, because he returned the next morning looking slightly hungover, er, tired as he recovered, chowing down on a plate of steak and eggs.

Robert Pattinson Talks About Kissing Kristen Stewart
Pattinson recently spoke with Now Magazine about what it's like to kiss Stewart, "When we start the kissing scenes I forget we're surrounded by a load of people. I actually end up getting really carried away."
"It's only when the kiss is finished that my mind registers there's actually a set full of people around, and I just walk away embarrassed." Pattinson continued.
We can definitely sense that in their scenes together! But that's what makes it so good right? What do you think about Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's chemistry? Is it what sells you on the films? Sound off below!

'Vampires Suck' EXCLUSIVE Clip: Bella Swan Should Take Self-Defense Lessons From Frank Crane
The next few weeks are big ones in the world of music and movie releases—particularly for the Blu-Ray and DVD markets hoping to capitalize on all the holiday shopping happening. Personally, I'm a big fan of DVD/Blu-Rays as gifts. They make great stocking stuffers, and they're perfect for last-minute occasions! But I digress...all this talk of DVD releases is to remind all you Crushers that today's big release is the other vampire-centric movie of the year, "Vampires Suck." To celebrate this excellent occasion, we have an EXCLUSIVE clip for your viewing and LOLing pleasure.
In this scene, "Becca Crane" gets a self defense lesson from her father. I'd like to point out here how funny I find the leading characters' names to be. Those who've seen the film already know, but Becca Crane? Come on, that's funny! Her last name is a bird too! Like "Twilight" leading lady Bella Swan. So pun-ny. And Edward Sullen? Jacob White? I love it. Anyway, in the clip, Becca's dunderheaded dad announces to his daughter that a body was discovered drained of all its blood, full of bite marks, so there is a killer on the loose.
"The blood was drained from his body and he had multiple bite wounds all over his neck, you know what that means?" Papa Crane asks. "The Kardashians are in town."
He then instructs Becca to mace him for practice and then kick him where he "breeds." (He might say "breathes" or "bleeds," but it sounded like "breeds" to me.) Naturally Becca doesn't hold back at all and lays into her dad with the mace and a painful kick.
"You got the franks and beans there," Dad sputters out. "Good for you!"

A Walter Salles ROAD Map
The filmmaker. who for several years now has sought to bring Jack Kerouac's classic Beat Generation novel ON THE ROAD to the big screen, has collected around 100 hours of interviews, archival footage and more in preparation of his dream project. For his big night, Salles put together an hour of this material as a work-in-progress documentary, IN SEARCH OF ON THE ROAD.
Kerouac's book may well defeat Salles, as it has other directors, but at least he seems to have gotten a fantastic souvenir program out of it with the doc. True, the Kerouac and Beat Generation back story will be overly familiar to the novel's fans and observations from the likes of Johnny Depp and Sean Penn add absolutely nothing to Kerouac's legend.
What fascinates are the tales of other filmmakers who have been involved with the project over the years. Kerouac himself - impressed by the Bob Dylan doc DON'T LOOK BACK - wanted documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker to have a go at it. In the early 1980s, French New Wave provocateur Jean-Luc Godard came to Hollywood to make it, intending to cast the 40-something Dennis Hopper as "young jailkid" Moriarty. Hopper is hilarious in Salles' doc, recounting how Godard fled California and the project before even meeting his star.
Francis Ford Coppola has owned the rights to ON THE ROAD for decades now, and one assumes that he is the one who went so far as to audition actors back in the '90s. Salles' film currently opens with a selection of these auditions and it is a who's who of the up-and-coming before they arrived: Matthew McConaughey, Brendan Fraser (the best of the lot, a reminder of how good he can be when he's engaged in better material than the kid flicks that have hijacked his career), Mira Sorvino, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ashley Judd, and Russell Crowe.
It is charming seeing these fresh-faced youth in a moment before they were stars, but it also underlines what a landmine filming this particular book will be. Put faces to protagonists Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, and the characters become just another actor's exercise. Rob the story of its most striking feature, Kerouac's singular way with language, and it becomes just another road movie and not unlike a movie Salles' has already made, THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES.
Salles' enthusiasm for the project was palpable at the SFIFF screening, but so were his doubts. One has to wonder, is he really wedded to the idea of adapting a novel that may prove impervious to film or is he merely in love with the romance of the road? If it is the latter and THE MOTORCYCLE DIAIRIES didn't satisfy that itch, is ON THE ROAD the right way to go or is there a better way to catch its spirit than a literal translation of the novel?
Nine years ago, SFIFF screened AMERICAN SAINT, a comedy by Joseph Castelo that distilled Kerouac's essence with a light touch in a story about a New York cabbie driving an actor across country to an audition for a Kerouac biopic. That movie, starring the late Vincent Schiavelli as the driver and Kevin Corrigan as the actor, may be as close to ON THE ROAD as anyone's likely to get.
Rudy Wurlitzer (who appears in Salles' doc) is another filmmaker who comes close with CANDY MOUNTAIN, co-directed with photographer Robert Frank (who made the 1959, Kerouac-penned short "Pull My Daisy"), a drama in which Kevin J. O'Connor hits the highway in search of a legendary guitar maker. In this year's SFIFF, Mike Ott's LITTLEROCK takes places mostly within the city limits of its titular desert town instead of on the road, but it captures Kerouac's spirit of Americana in its story of two Japanese tourists' unexpected stop over.
Before Salles spends millions of dollars making a movie that likely will never live up to its source material, he might want to consider those movies and others like them. There are ways to hit the highway without being ON THE ROAD. (Pam Grady)

"Welcome to the Rileys" review: No compromises
Young people picture middle age as something out of "Welcome to the Rileys," where people smoke and play cards and eat waffles (even though they're already enormous) and wake up in the middle of the night, staring off into the existential abyss - or sobbing.
There are many things to admire about this movie, but the main one is that it doesn't compromise. It tells a story of a couple mired in gloom, and so the atmosphere is gloomy and the pace is measured. There are no easy solutions, but there is a sort of break in the clouds. James Gandolfini is a small-businessman in Indiana, living in some kind of frozen-limbo-dead marriage to Melissa Leo. And then one day, while at a convention in New Orleans, he meets a 16-year-old stripper/prostitute (Kristen Stewart) and takes a genuine and fatherly interest in her life and well-being.
New Orleans makes the perfect setting - once known as a party city, now known as a disaster area. The resonances couldn't be more appropriate. Stewart is a mess in this movie - no compromise on that end, either. Her hair is unwashed, and her face is perpetually in the midst of some bad skin outbreak. Only someone as messed up and down on himself as this Indiana businessman could ever be expected to look at her with no judgment and no sense of moral superiority. That, in a sentence, is the beauty of this movie.
He's big and fat, she's little and skinny. She's ridiculously young, and he feels as if he's a hundred. But there's something going on here, a spiritual connection, not sexual but paternal and filial - a connection taking place at the last possible moment this girl might still be reached. Might. Again, no compromises.
Gandolfini plays tough guys, but he's an actor of gracefulness and refinement, with lots going on in the silences. And it's a pleasure to see Stewart ("Twilight") not trying to navigate sex with a vampire or a werewolf, but as a young actress, impressive with her quirky timing, unexpected line readings and expressive eyes. She doesn't go in for sentiment - at all. Actually no one does here, which means this is director Jake Scott's doing, too, and he deserves the credit.
-- Advisory: Sexual situations, strong language, drug use.

Transcript of Kristen and Taylor’s Q&A from Australian "Eclipse" DVD
Richard Wilkins welcomes Kristen and Taylor to the stage to very loud screams from the fans.
Richard yells over the fans, “How are you?”
Kristen puts her hands around her mouth to yell back to him, “Doing pretty good!” and laughs.
Are they enjoying Australia?
KS: “Yeah!”
TL: “We’re having a great time.”
Asked about what they’ve been doing since they got here:
TL: “Yeah, We did a little bit yesterday. We had a lot of fun. We got to hold wallabies, koalas, baby dingoes…”
KS: “The dingoes were like ridiculously – you wanted to punch them they were so cute!” *crowd laughs*
