In a weird bit of synchronicity, I had no sooner emailed Team 411 with, “How about we talk about Kristen’s red carpet style for this week’s Examiner piece?” when photos from the London New Moon fan event started rolling out. The first couple showed Kristen with lovely makeup and pulled-back hair (“best mullet management”, one of our followers called it), and a very couture coat. And then the coat came off. And I went, “What the [eff] is that?!” I very rarely have that reaction to KStew’s red carpet looks. Generally Kristen is a fashion plate, making edgy, slightly off-beat fashion choices that seem to echo the kind of acting roles to which she is attracted. Though the media often bemoans her everyday look of jeans, tee shirts, and hoodies, when it comes to the red carpet, Kristen Stewart kills.
The most prominent pre-Twilight red carpet Kristen walked was for the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards in early 2008. Into the Wild was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast, and Kristen wore a navy blue J. Mendel evening gown. It was her first major awards show appearance and also her first time stepping out in big-time haute couture. My thoughts on this gown are mixed. It’s a lovely dress, and the color looks great against Kristen’s pale skin and dark hair. She made a good call in nixing accessories—skin like hers needs no gilding. She made an even better decision in pinning up the chiffon sleeves of the dress to create a tank neckline. However, the gown is a bit heavy. Kristen is teeny tiny, and this dress overpowered her little frame, making it look a bit matronly. That said, this gown represents a solid start into her red carpet career. It showed her willingness to go haute, and that she is unafraid to alter a dress to better suit her.
Press for the Twilight Saga tends to be a blitzkrieg with a million red carpets, so I’ll just rundown the top looks from late 2008’s press tour. Three of the press tour stops produced stand-out looks, and one stop, Tokyo, had two. In London Kristen went with a black one-shouldered La Perla asymmetric dress with a barely-there skirt. I like to call KStew “Legs McGee” when she wears something which emphasizes her amazing gams, and this was certainly a moment for Legs McGee.
She accessorized this look with a cuff bracelet, a Chanel Camellia cocktail ring, and miles and miles of her what-I-wouldn’t-do-for-a-complexion-like-that skin. I loved this look. The dress she wore to the Los Angeles premiere of Twilight, however, is another story.
There she went with another one-shouldered dress, this time from Balenciaga’s 2009 resort line. Didn’t love this one, to be honest. Like the SAG dress, it seems slightly too old for Kristen, though she did hit every style mark with her hair, makeup, and few accessories. She just didn’t seem super comfortable or confident in this one, as if someone had to coax her into it. I can almost hear the stylist saying, “But it’s Balenciaga!” Tokyo, however, more than made up for Los Angeles
Tokyo, however, more than made up for Los Angeles. In early 2009, Kristen took two very different looks to Japan for the Asian premiere of Twilight. First, at a press conference, she wore a very rocker-chic black leather mini-dress from Paule Ke. Black leather mini-dresses are something only a ridiculously beautiful and punky nineteen-year-old could wear
At the actual premiere in Tokyo, Kristen pulled out the first full-length gown she had worn throughout the Twilight press tour. Rumor has it the white Herve Leroux goddess gown was supposed to be her Oscar dress. I’m actually glad she didn’t wear this on an Oscar red carpet. While she would get points for wearing white to the Academy Awards (which is an underused look there), this dress was also slightly too old for her. Maybe it’s the train, maybe it’s the way the draping flattens her curves, but it too was a bit too heavy for her. That said, Kristen once again nails hair and makeup, upping the overall presentation of the look.
That brings us to March 2009 and the last red carpet Kristen would hit for a while. Premiering Adventureland in Los Angeles, Kristen stunned in a skintight, super short, coral and black mini-dress by Herve Leger. The front of the dress showed a high neck and cap sleeves, but then she turned around and BOOM. No back. Amazing. Kristen Stewart, as many men will tell you, is hot. She has a rocking body that she—to her credit—never flaunts. She could very easily be like every other starlet and wear skimpy clothes to every event (has Amanda Bynes even heard of pants?), but she very rarely wears such revealing things. If she does, she often pairs it with a blazer, as she did in Tokyo. But she let the Leger mini-dress stand alone, pairing it with only black pumps. This is also one of Kristen’s more editorial looks. Not everyone loved this dress. Team 411 stands divided on it, but we can all agree on this: to pull this dress of you have to have a seriously svelte body, which Kristen does. The one strike against this look is the styling. The hair and makeup is far too severe, but overall this ranks as one of Kristen’s bolder fashion moments.
When Kristen arrived at the Teen Choice Awards in August, there was only one question on everybody’s mind: What would she do with the Joan-hair? How could a jet black mullet be styled into something “appropriate”? The answer: with a Frederic Fekkai spiky up-do, paired with a Rock & Republic dress with a skirt made out of bullets. Kristen personalized the dress by adding a white undershirt, once again tweaking a design to better suit her own taste
And now we are in the middle of Pressapalooza 2009, as Kristen promotes New Moon around the world. There have been some really stunning looks so far, with still a week of promotional engagements to go, but three have really stood out. As LaineyGossip likes to say, Kristen has mad steeze (style + ease = steeze), and that has been on full display so far. First, in Paris, Kristen again opted for elegant and grown-up with a chiffon J. Mendel strapless dress and sleek hair with neutral makeup. This dress is perfectly tailored, drapes beautifully, and Kristen seemed to float through the photocall in it, every inch a poised and confident young woman.
And then came London. For London, Kristen went funky, beyond edgy, and straight up wild, donning a Proenza Schouler top + skirt in contrasting patterns and with bold blue, yellow and green colors. Is this my favorite look? No, and largely because the top isn’t tailored. Does it take some getting used to? Yes, because it’s very editorial. Was this a bold, edgy choice perfectly suited to fashion-forward London? Absolutely. And if there’s one complaint that can be made against Kristen’s fashion choices, it’s that she tends to wear a lot of achromatic dresses that are strapless or one-shouldered. Well here you go with a burst of color and something with sleeves. Kristen took a risk in London and that’s how you stay at the forefront of fashion—by taking risks. And as one Team 411 member said, she wore this outfit perfectly by sticking to simple, pulled-back hair, smoky eyes, no accessories and plain black—albeit Gucci—pumps. Love it or hate it, Kristen wore the hell out of this ensemble.
We’ve got to have a quick chat about KStew’s shoes. Kristen is an avid collector of sneakers, so it’s no secret that she likes shoes. And when it comes to red carpet shoes, no one is bringing it more consistently with the footwear than she does. The Louboutin’s and Giuseppe Zanotti’s in Madrid, the Sergio Rossi’s in Paris, the Jimmy Choo’s in Los Angeles. I could go on and on about KStew’s shoes. Suffice it to say that the shoe-steeze is off the chain.
So this is all just my opinion. Feel free to tweet me which looks are you favorite, and what shoes you most covet from Kristen’s collection. We can all overdose on gorgeossity and shoe-steeze together.
What's great about the Team is that they sure do keep up with Kristen Stewart's fashion. This account of Stewart's wardrobe selections over the years, for better or for worse (some of the featured styles are included in the slideshow below), really brings the story of Kristen Stewart's progression as a fashionista to life. Whether or not you agree with the opinions here, there's certainly a great deal of knowledge to back it up!
