Twilight Effect: Pale Skin Is In

The mood of the Twilight movies is dark and gloomy but the porcelain skin on display is now all the rage in Hollywood and beyond.

Nicole Kidman could be the poster child for pale skin and there are many starlets who look like they prefer the light of the moon to the sun.

Mallory Hollingsworth is in elementary school and said she's noticed some pale complexions.

"Nobody really talks about it but people, a lot of people are pale," Mallory said.

Her mom Kayce said it's probably a good thing.

"Well I think it's healthier for sure because the sun, you have to put sunscreen on you don't have as much issue with skin cancer," Kayce said.

The potentially fatal skin cancer melanoma is the most common cancer in women between 25 and 29 years of age.

Baylor-Plano dermatologist Mark Thieberg doesn't care who started the trend but said he considers it good news.

"If there is a trend to having lighter skin be it because of Hollywood or TV or anything then that is going to pay dividends in terms of reducing the risk of skin cancer," Dr. Thieberg said.

There are websites devoted to pale skin and how to get it. Many include recipes that promise a fairer complexion. Dr. Thieberg hasn't said he hasn't had anyone ask for prescription strength skin fading creams but believes there is a slow trend toward preventing skin cancer.

"In the 70's and 80's it was very very trendy to be tan and I do think in general we see some of that start to reverse, at least more awareness that tanning isn't so healthy," Dr. Thieberg said.

But not everyone, including high school senior Rachel Wayne, has seen the light."I think it's kind of depressing," Rachel said. "I think it looks healthy to be tan."And what about those home make skin lighteners? Dr. Thieberg suggests checking with your doctor before applying.
