• Dakota Fanning, Kristen Stewart and Michael Shannon in The Runaways: Floria Sigismondi’s debut didn’t light the fire it should have, but then again, The Runaways didn't get the respect they deserve either. This story of Joan Jett and Cherie Currie’s rise and fall in the world of ’70s L.A. glitter was a chick flick with a chip on its shoulder. The outsider vibe buzzes all the way through this visually evocative art film with next-gen talents. Fanning and Stewart dominate the screen as young performers with natural presence, but it’s really Michael Shannon as gonzo promoter Kim Fowley who picks the set decor apart with his teeth.
