In Kristen Stewart’s Defence

With the limited release of Welcome to the Rileys, a certain topic will most likely resurface and get movie-goers talking. The question at hand is whether Kristen Stewart is a credible actress or not.

The success of the Twilight series has been both a blessing and burden in regards to Kristen Stewart’s career. On the one hand she has become a household name to young audiences across the globe but on the other hand, it seems like a vast number of movie lovers believe she’s the definition of a one-note actress that can only play the role of a foreboding teenager.

Before her role as Bella in the Twilight series, Stewart had her fair share of experience ranging from commercial, mainstream movies to smaller independent films. She has portrayed roles in serious, suspenseful films such as in David Fincher’s Panic Room playing opposite of Jodie Foster and in Mike Figgis‘ Cold Creek Manor, but she has also had her share of fluff roles in Catch That Kid and Zathura. When her face started to feel more familiar to audiences, she began to take roles in smaller productions such as In The Land of Women and The Cake Eaters; two films that I touch upon in this week’s video.

Once she made an impact on people in the Twilight films, it seemed as if people had thrown away her previous acting credentials. Because the Bella character rubbed some audiences the wrong way by coming off as mumbly and whiny, movie-goers didn’t feel the need to give Stewart a chance and view some of her other work to see that she’s a sufficient actress. It’s disappointing because some of her earlier work represents just how capable she is when it comes to creating and presenting a developed character.

Stewart, however, is aware that people may typecast her as an angsty persona and has obviously tried her hand at a variety of radical characters to convince people otherwise. Audiences saw this determination in this year’s The Runaways and will most likely see it in Welcome to the Rileys where she plays a down-on-her-luck stripper.

Hopefully, people stop immediately jumping on the “We Hate Kristen Stewart” bandwagon just because of her work in Twilight. It isn’t fair to judge a book by its cover. If movie lovers check out her older work and still dislike her, that’s fine and that’s their opinion. But, in the meantime, those haters should just stop, take a breather, and consider the fact that Stewart may be capable of turning in a solid performance.

This is a video I shot a while ago, when I first saw The Cake Eaters. I talk about some of the issues I’ve stated already, but the video allows me to give more detail about some of her past films I was impressed with. Seeing that people are still jumping on the Kristen Stewart hate train, I thought that this would be an opportunity to present this video to the Film Army community; being that the ideas discussed are still relevant with her new film currently making its rounds and with Eclipse out on DVD and Blu-Ray.
