‘Twilight’ Director Dishes On Pattinson & Stewart’s Audition Chemistry

Accesshollywood: Kristen Stewart was Team Pattinson from the very beginning.

“Red Riding Hood” director Catherine Hardwicke, who helmed the first “Twilight” film, knows Robert Pattinson was the right choice to play Edward Cullen — but her “Red Riding Hood” young leading man gave Robert a run for his money.

Shiloh Fernandez, who plays Amanda Seyfried’s love interest in “Red Riding Hood,” was a frontrunner for the role of Edward Cullen, but Catherine told Access Hollywood that Robert and Kristen Stewart had a chemistry that was undeniable.

I thought he could have been very good in that role… (but) he was beat out by Rob because Rob and Kristen they just had that chemistry,” she told Access during the “Red Riding Hood” press junket.

As it turns out, Kristen, who plays “Twilight Saga” heroine Bella Swan in the film franchise, played a significant role in choosing Robert for the role because Catherine wanted to ensure that the chemistry was real.

I want my leading ladies to be involved in that because they’re the people that are actually going to be there and you want those real sparks and you want that real chemistry on some level, instead of having to fake it, or create it, or edit it around it,” the director added.

After auditioning with the final four candidates for Edward, Kristen had already picked out who she wanted as her co-star.

I brought the four guys that I thought were the best and she had to make out with them or do four different scenes with them and at the end of those two days she said, ‘It’s gotta be Rob’” Catherine said.

Their chemistry transcended the set and Catherine confirmed to Access that she had to warn Rob about dating Kristen because she was only 17 at the time.

I don’t now what the laws were in England and so I just wanted to be sure he knew that we did have a law here,” she revealed.
