Bella, Sookie & Elena all have very different relationship philosophies. Who do YOU identify with most?
Relationships are all about give and take — and that can get even more complicated when you’re dating a vampire. Earlier this week, Nina Dobrev said there’s “always a possibility” her Vampire Diaries character, Elena, could turn into a vampire in order to be with one of her undead suitors… and that got us thinking: How much should a girl be willing to change about herself in order to make a relationship work? Is it better to be like Twilight’s Bella (Kristen Stewart), who changes herself completely, or True Blood’s Sookie (Anna Paquin), who refuses to give up an ounce of herself just to please her man?
Bella, in my opinion, is the weakest of the three vampire girlfriends. While her unwavering devotion to Edward (Robert Pattinson) is admirable, it’s also her Achilles Heel, as she ultimately (spoiler alert) decides to become a vampire in order to be with him forever. While doing this grants her an eternity with the man she loves, you also have to consider everything she gives up: her family, her life and her entire sense of self… to name just a few.
Then there’s True Blood’s Sookie, who I consider to be the strongest and most confident of the three. She may not always know what she is (spoiler alert #2: she’s a fairy) but she definitely knows who she is. Besides never wanting to become a vampire herself, Sookie also knows how to keep her men in line. Remember last summer’s finale? She screamed at Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) until they were literally blown out of her house.
The Vampire Diaries‘ Elena seems to exist somewhere in between Bella and Sookie. While she’s not jumping at the first chance to turn herself, like Bella, she also doesn’t totally rule out the option like Sookie. (Keep in mind, I know what happens in L.J. Smith’s book series; I’m focusing on the TV show.)
So tell us: Which vampire girlfriend do YOU most identify with in this situation? Are you a Bella, who would do a 180 in order to make your relationship work; a Sookie, who would never change herself for a man; or an Elena, who’s weighing her options before making any hasty decisions?
