Squamish fans a-Twitter over Twilight

Whether it’s a compliment that Squamish so easily passes as Twilight’s “rainy and dreary” Forks, Wash., appears irrelevant to the hundreds of Twilight fans in Squamish who are thrilled to see the actors frequenting their regular hangouts.

Squamish is gaining recognition across North America as the venue for two months’ worth of filming of Breaking Dawn, appearing in celebrity blogs such as Hollywood Life, Rob Stenation, Lainey Gossip and Just Spotted.

“It’s been super exciting to have the cast and crew of Twilight in town,” said local Bianca Peters, who admits to becoming “giddy as a school girl” when she met them, despite being in her 30s.

“The hotels are full and the restaurants are busier than ever. Their presence in town has spurred interest in Squamish and has been economically beneficial for the community — you can’t buy advertising like this.”

Twitter and Facebook are plastered with pictures of Squamish residents and their favourite Twilight characters at Rockwell’s, Sushi Sen, Pepe and Gringo’s, Booster Juice, The Rock Bar and Grill, Garibaldi 5 Cinemas and other venues around town.

One Twitter photo showed about a dozen girls clustered around Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart outside the local movie theatre.

Fourteen-year-old Addie Robertson said she was given the “thrill of a lifetime” when she had the chance to meet Booboo Stewart (shape-shifter Seth Clearwater) outside Booster Juice in Garibaldi Village.

“Me and my parents were driving in the parking lot of London Drugs and all of a sudden we see this red car pull over and Booboo gets out and meanwhile, while the car’s still moving, I opened the door and tried to get out.”

She waited eagerly with a dozen other girls waiting for him to leave the juice bar.

“Then he got out and it was amazing,” she said. “He’s not that big of a star but it was still incredible just to meet a celebrity. We talked and got pictures and autographs and it was just really an amazing experience.”

According to Robertson, she was “absolutely obsessed” two years ago when the first movies started coming out, and she’s still a fan, but not so obsessed.

“It was still awesome meeting a celebrity in such a popular movie,” she said.

Robertson said several of her friends started plotting ways to meet the cast as soon as they arrived in Squamish.

“As soon as everyone found out the Twilight cast was in town they started making plans to go celebrity hunting,” she said, adding one of her friends met Taylor Lautner and another couple met her favourite, Kellan Lutz.

“I’d love to meet all of them but if I could choose one, I’d love to meet Kellan Lutz,” she said. “I have this really big crush on him.”

According to Lutz who plays Emmett Cullen in the Twilight series, he would love to meet her too. A Chief reporter was “lucky enough” to run into Lutz at Club Flex and he said he loves meeting Twilight fans.

“I’m a people person, so I love meeting the fans that are so passionate about the movie,” he said, although he prefers not to be asked for pictures when working out at the gym.

“It’s part of the role — I’ve been to the movies and you go in there wearing your hat and you come out and there’s girls who want pictures and autographs, which is great and fine.

“As long as they aren’t chasing you down, screaming and throwing stuff at you, I’m always down to have a good conversation.”

Lutz offered some advice to fans who are eager to have real conversations.

“Let’s just say you have a better chance of getting personal time if you don’t text all your friends and there’s a group of 30 people outside a movie theatre versus two or three,” he said.

For Lutz, Squamish is a great place to be shooting the movie because he loves the outdoors and the scenery.

“I love it up here because it’s so beautiful,” he said. “I love the woods, I love hiking and want to hike the Chief before I go.”

Aside from hiking the Chief and taking photos, some residents hope the actors will take part in other community events.

“It’s great to have them in town and I would like to take this opportunity to invite the members of the cast and crew to take part in the upcoming Rock Bar Rock Star Karaoke at Chances starting next Thursday (April 7),” said Peters, marketing director at Chances Casino. “I hear they like karaoke and I’m sure there is a lot of talent among them. If not singing, perhaps they would considering being a guest judge.”
