Relativity Moves Up 'Snow White' Film Release to Beat Universal's 'SWATH'

The film was originally set for a June 29, 2012 release.

Not to be outdone by Universal, Relativity Media has moved up its untitled Brothers Grimm: Snow White movie to March 16, 2012. The switch-up comes only days after Universal boldly slotted its Show White film to open just before Relativity’s film.

Relativity’s Snow White will now debut in theaters on March 16, 2012, instead of June 29, 2012. March is a lucrative frame for family-friendly fare, such as Relativity’s Snow White, starring Julia Roberts, Lily Collins and Armie Hammer.

Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman is set to open June 1, 2012. Universal had original planned to open the movie in December 2012, and caught Relativity off guard when throwing down the gauntlet and moving up the release date.

Not that the two films will necessarily appeal to the same exact audiences; Snow White and the Huntsman, staring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, is a darker retelling of the classic fairy tale.

And lobbing its own shot at Universal, Relativity announced it will open Safe Haven, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel, on June 1, 2012—the same date as Snow White.

Relativity also dated Phillip Noyce’s Hunter Killer, which rolls out in theaters on Dec. 21, 2012.
